Title: From Transactional to Transformational: Effective Referrals for Student Success
Lead Presenter: Niki Weight
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Advisors are often the first to know what challenges students are experiencing, and as such consistently refer students to appropriate resources. For referrals to be effective, students need transformational referrals (preparing students to advocate for their needs) rather than transactional referrals (providing information). This session will discuss how to use relational and transformational advising approaches to support students, particularly those from underrepresented communities, in identifying challenges and needs and building self-advocacy skills to seek out resources. Attendees will engage in critical conversations about common barriers to help-seeking behaviors and learn about practices implemented by educator preparation programs to enhance referral practices. Attendees will leave with strategies for transforming help-seeking mindsets and implementing effective referral practices in their day-to-day student interactions
