Title: Helping Students Belong: Expanding Understandings of Sense of Belonging in the Advisor Toolkit
Lead Presenter: Amanda Lager Gleason
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Advisors have applied sense of belonging strategies to advising theories, specific advising communities, and advisor training. However, most sense of belonging frameworks only consider academic and social engagement while neglecting other domains which may contribute to belonging. This presentation will enhance advisors' understandings of sense of belonging via theory that describes two additional sense of belonging domains (surroundings and personal spaces) and that expands academic and social engagement domains. This theoretical framework and examples of practical applications from the presenter extend previous definitions of sense of belonging and provide advisors with new ideas for building relationships with students and colleagues. The session will be interactive and will allow attendees time to connect, build collective knowledge and strategies around sense of belonging, and learn new methodologies, practices, and frameworks to apply to their own institutional contexts.
