GPA and the Real World: Advising's Focus on GPA Across Disciplines
This presentation will highlight the historical value placed on GPA during advising meetings, as well as share survey results from advisors across multiple disciplines (Arts, Sciences, Nursing, & Engineering). Results and discussion will highlight the importance assigned to student GPA during advising meetings, and whether advisors from each discipline view a high GPA as indicative of success for both degree attainment and career placement. Due to the long-held belief that STEM students face significantly higher levels of stress and pressure to perform academically due to more competitive degrees and job markets, an in-depth assessment of STEM responses will be shared. Strategies for how advisors of all disciplines can alleviate some of this pressure will be provided. |
