Title: Navigating Our Identities in the Advising Relationship: From Barriers to Bridges
Lead Presenter: Tim Cox
Date: October 23, 2022    Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Room: B115, OCC
Abstract: We can build bridges in our advising relationships by honoring who we were, who we are, and who we are becoming. The purpose of this pre-conference workshop is to engage in activities and discussions that will help participants understand how to navigate their unique identities and experiences in order to build stronger connections with students. Participants will engage in five interactive activities with four learning outcomes tied throughout. Through the 'How I See Myself' and 'Deeper Look' activities, participants will gain a greater self-awareness of salient and non-salient identities. Participants will engage in reflective conversation around the 'intersubjective-relative approach,' a strategy advisors can use to connect with students to make informed emotional, cultural, academic, and professional decisions. Similarly, participants will learn how to deconstruct their own biases through the practice of motivational and cognitive debiasing techniques. In the culminating 'Theory to Practice' activity, participants will have an opportunity to simulate their own identity navigation through the use of the four-step intersubjective-relative advising approach. All participants, whether they are new or experienced, will recognize when their identities and experiences can be perceived as barriers, and ultimately walk away with tools that will allow them to build strong bridges in their advising relationships.
