Title: Case-Management Advising: Creating an Action Plan for Development and Implementation
Lead Presenter: Ashleigh Crowe
Date: October 23, 2022    Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Room: B116, OCC
Abstract: In 2015, the facilitators' institution began a two-year pilot in the University College to improve retention for first-year students by employing a case management approach to academic advising where each advisor used proactive (intrusive), developmental, relational, and holistic techniques with their advisees. Two years of persistence and retention rates suggested a connection between this new advising approach and retaining more first-year students. We then scaled the model college-wide beginning fall 2018. In 2021, the success of the model contributed to the institution securing a 9-million-dollar grant designed to, in part, implement case-management advising throughout the institution. This workshop will assist participants with understanding the various advising models described as 'case management.' It also will ensure that participants leave the workshop with an action plan to jumpstart the development and implementation of case-management advising in their units. These action plans will include a participant-crafted definition of case management advising, a list of the relevant stakeholders at the participant's institution who will play a critical role in the implementation of initiative, a budgetary model for calculating staffing and resource needs to implement this model and a draft of an assessment plan to demonstrate the model's effectiveness.
