Title: Building a Better Mousetrap: Creating an Interview Process That Matters
Lead Presenter: Karen Hauschild
Date: October 25, 2022    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: D139-140, OCC
Abstract: As American philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson coined the phrase: 'Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door.' Sometimes all it takes is a new way of looking at the same problem and implement a solution that results in a better end product. As advising administrators, it is sometimes a challenge to recruit, hire and train a new professional, especially if you have high turnover. You feel like a mouse on a wheel as staff members leave, you have to jump back on the wheel in an effort to find another great employee. Doing so takes a lot of precious time and energy.

This pre-conference workshop is designed to have you take a critical look at your hiring processes from the position description and the job posting to the selection of the candidate to interview and the interview questions themselves. Many people do not take the selection and interview process seriously enough to net the employee you are seeking who can not only do the work, but who is also coachable and fits into your office culture. If your process is good from beginning to end, the best candidates will emerge.

Come to this pre-conference ready to work. Bringing a work team is ideal but individual participants can begin the work and take back to their teams. Time to work on your materials is built into this pre-conference.
