Abstract:
|
First-year advising can feel like a first date. Though advisors and students are strangers to each other, similar to dating, they are bound in a co-constructed experience wherein two people are learning about each other. But how much are we learning about our students? In busy times of back-to-back appointments, are we taking shortcuts by only thinking about first-year trends or asking a few open-ended questions? Feeling jaded? Been ghosted? Keep the magic alive during first-year advising using a hermeneutic and cultural wealth model approach, grounded in epistemic humility. Swipe right and see your students with new eyes, as full partners in making meaning of their degrees. |
